Guidelines for Writers

Anvil Press is a literary publisher interested in contemporary, progressive literature in all genres. We must stress that we are a small publisher, publishing 10 – 12 titles per year. In general, we are planning at least 12 months in advance and, at present, only consider work by Canadian authors. We do not publish the following kinds of books:

• formulaic genre novels: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, Romance etc.
• self-help
• children’s books
• YA (young adult)

To expedite the process of query/consideration/response, we strongly suggest that authors familiarize themselves with our backlist of titles prior to submitting their manuscripts; this saves both time and money (postage, copying) on the part of authors and publishers.

Only those manuscripts accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) will be considered and/or returned. We assume no responsibility for unsolicited manuscripts arriving without a SASE.

All submissions should be typed/printed, double-spaced (one side only) on 81/2 x 11 paper.

Response time can, on occasion, be lengthy (up to a year at times); if you want to be assured that your manuscript has been received, include a self-addressed stamped postcard for notification. We do NOT accept email submissions or discuss book ideas or proposals on the phone. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please inform us as soon as possible if your manuscript has been accepted for publication elsewhere.

Provide a brief, one-page synopsis of the entire manuscript (no need to break it down chapter by chapter) plus 20-30 pps. of the manuscript (enough to give the reader a good sense of style/content)

We also publish books about Vancouver and this place known as the Pacific Northwest. We are interested in receiving proposals for books about our area of the world, particularly Vancouver.

General poetry queries:
Send a sample of 8 – 12 poems with a query letter.

A Feed Dog Book:

You may query imprint editor Stuart Ross at Stuart is particularly interested in seeing surrealist and surrealist-influenced manuscripts from members of diverse and marginalized communities.

Plays must have received at least one professional production to be considered for publication. Please forward the entire manuscript.

Before sending off your manuscript to a given publisher, check out that publisher’s books and catalogues online or at your local library or bookstore. Select those that you think would most likely be interested in your work. You may also want to check out our affiliated magazine, subTerrain.
